Varanasi (বা বেনারস/কাশী) হিন্দুধর্মের অন্যতম প্রধান তীর্থস্থান। হিন্দু পুরাণ অনুযায়ী, এটি শিবের নগরী এবং পৃথিবীর অন্যতম প্রাচীন জীবন্ত শহর। ধর্মীয় গুরুত্বের বাইরে বেনারস আসলে এক বিশাল কালচারাল হাব - ভিন্ন মানুষ, সংস্কৃতি, খাবার আর গল্পে ভরা একটা শহর। ২০২৩ সালের মাঝামাঝিতে প্রথমবার দেশের বাইরে ঘুরতে যাওয়ার সুযোগ হয়েছিল। প্রায় ১০ দিনের ভারত ভ্রমণে অনেক জায়গা ঘুরলেও সবচেয়ে বেশি মনে রয়ে গেছে বেনারস। শহরটার মধ্যে একটা অদ্ভুত অনুভূতি আছে - আসি ঘাটের সন্ধ্যা, গঙ্গায় নৌকাভ্রমণ, সরু গলির ভিড়, আর হাজার বছরের পুরোনো একটা আবহ।খাবারের দিক থেকেও বেনারস অসাধারণ। সকালে কচুরি-সবজি আর জিলাপি, বিকেলে টমেটো চাট, মালাইয়ো, লস্যি - আর গলিতে গলিতে ছোট ছোট দোকানের নানা স্ট্রিট ফুড এখনো মনে আছে।বেনারসের সবচেয়ে বিখ্যাত জায়গাগুলোর একটি মানিকার্নিকা ঘাট। এটি হিন্দুদের অন্যতম প্রধান শ্মশানঘাট, যেখানে দিন-রাত চিতা জ্বলে। হিন্দু ধর্মমতে, এখানে শেষকৃত্য সম্পন্ন হলে মোক্ষ লাভ হয়। জায়গাটা একই সঙ্গে ভয়ংকর, রহস্যময় এবং গভীরভাবে বাস্তব। জীবন আর মৃত্যুকে এত কাছ থেকে আমি আগে কখনো দেখিনি।তবে এসব কিছুর বাইরেও আরেকটা ব্যাপার আমাকে ভাবিয়েছে। উল্লেখ্য, বেনারসের এমপি নরেন্দ্র মোদি নিজে এবং উত্তর প্রদেশের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী যোগী আদিত্যনাথ। অনেকের কাছে বেনারস হিন্দুধর্মের “কিবলা” বলা যায়। তবুও ঠিক মানিকার্নিকা ঘাটের পাশেই প্রায় ৪০০ বছর পুরোনো দারুণ সুন্দর একটা মসজিদ আছে - বাদশাহী আলমগীর মসজিদ। আর প্রধান ঘাট থেকে মাত্র ২০০-৩০০ মিটার দূরেই রয়েছে মুসলিমদের ছোট বাজার, যেখানে তসবিহ, জায়নামাজ থেকে শুরু করে বিভিন্ন খাবারের দোকানও আছে। সেখানে গরুর মাংস না পেলেও অন্য মাংসের অনেক সুস্বাদু আইটেম খেয়েছিলাম।ভারত ভ্রমণে আমার একটা জিনিস খুব মনে হয়েছে, বাইরে থেকে রাজনীতিবিদরা ধর্মে ধর্মে যত বিভাজনের গল্প দেখান, বাস্তবের অনেক জায়গায় সাধারণ মানুষের সহাবস্থানটা ভিন্নরকম। অন্তত তখন আমার এমনটাই মনে হয়েছিল। যদিও এখন, প্রায় তিন বছর পরে, পরিস্থিতি কতটা বদলেছে জানি না।মূল ঘাটগুলোর বাইরে ঘোরার মতো আরও অনেক জায়গা আছে। যেমন বেনারস হিন্দু ইউনিভার্সিটি, বিভিন্ন দুর্গ আর পুরোনো প্রাসাদ।আর বাঙালিদের জন্য বেনারসের সঙ্গে একটা আলাদা নস্টালজিয়াও জড়িয়ে আছে। সত্যেজিত রায়ের এর বিখ্যাত সিনেমা - 'জয় বাবা ফেলুনাথ' এর শুটিং হয়েছিল এই শহরেই। সিনেমায় দেখা সেই গলি, ঘাট আর পুরোনো বেনারসকে বাস্তবে দেখতে পারাটা অন্যরকম অনুভূতি ছিল। সেই সময় রায় সাহেব যে হোটেলে ছিলেন, প্রথমে আমাদেরও সেখানে থাকার পরিকল্পনা ছিল। যদিও শেষ পর্যন্ত রুম পাইনি। খুবই পুরোনো, জীর্ণশীর্ণ একটা ভবন, কিন্তু ভেতরে এখনো যেন পুরোনো বেনারস আর বাংলা সিনেমার একটা ইতিহাস আটকে আছে।কলকাতা থেকে বেনারস যাওয়া খুব সহজ। ট্রেনে প্রায় ৮ ঘণ্টার মতো লাগে। আমরা হাওড়া স্টেশন থেকে মাত্র ৫০০ টাকার স্ট্যান্ডিং টিকিট কেটেই রওনা দিয়েছিলাম।তবে একটা বিষয় মাথায় রাখতে হবে , বেনারস খুবই কেয়োটিক একটা শহর। প্রচণ্ড ভিড়, যানজট, গরম আর মানুষের আনাগোনা সবসময় লেগেই থাকে। যেহেতু এটি ধর্মীয় তীর্থস্থান, তাই জায়গাটার সংস্কৃতি ও পরিবেশের প্রতি সম্মান রাখাটাও জরুরি।তবুও সব বিশৃঙ্খলার মাঝেও বেনারসের আলাদা সৌন্দর্য আছে। এমন একটা শহর, যেটা হয়তো সবাইকে ভালো লাগবে না , কিন্তু একবার গেলে স্মৃতিতে থেকে যাবে বহুদিন।

Varanasi (also known as Benares or Kashi) is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Hinduism. According to Hindu mythology, it is the city of Lord Shiva and one of the oldest living cities in the world. But beyond its religious significance, Varanasi is a massive cultural hub, a city filled with different people, traditions, food, and endless stories.
Back in mid-2023, I got the chance to travel outside Bangladesh for the first time. During a nearly 10-day trip across India, I visited several places, but the one that stayed with me the most was Varanasi. There’s something strangely unforgettable about this city: the evening atmosphere at Assi Ghat, boat rides on the Ganges, the crowded narrow alleys, and the feeling of walking through thousands of years of history.
The food scene in Varanasi was incredible too. Morning breakfasts of kachori-sabzi and jalebi, evening snacks like tomato chaat, malaiyo, and lassi, plus countless tiny street food shops hidden inside the lanes, are still fresh in my memory.
One of the most famous places in the city is Manikarnika Ghat, one of the main Hindu cremation ghats where funeral pyres burn day and night. In Hindu belief, being cremated here helps attain moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). The place felt terrifying, mysterious, and deeply real at the same time. I had never witnessed life and death standing so close together before.
But beyond all of that, another thing made me think deeply. Varanasi’s Member of Parliament is Narendra Modi himself, and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh is Yogi Adityanath. Many people consider Varanasi the spiritual “heart” of Hinduism. Yet right beside Manikarnika Ghat stands the beautiful 400-year-old Alamgir Mosque. And just a short walk away from the main ghats, there’s a small Muslim market selling prayer beads, prayer mats, and various foods. While beef wasn’t available, I still had some amazing meat dishes there.
One thing I strongly felt during my India trip was this: from the outside, politics often makes religious divisions seem overwhelming, but in many real places, ordinary people coexist in a much more natural way. At least, that’s how it felt to me back then. Though now, almost three years later, I’m not sure how much has changed.
Beyond the main ghats, there are many more places worth exploring, like Banaras Hindu University, old forts, and historic palaces scattered around the city.
For Bengalis, Varanasi also carries a special nostalgia. Joi Baba Felunath, the iconic film by Satyajit Ray, was shot here. Seeing those same alleys, ghats, and old corners of Varanasi in real life felt surreal. We had actually planned to stay at the same hotel where Ray once stayed during filming, but unfortunately couldn’t get a room. The building itself was old and worn down, yet somehow it still carried the atmosphere of old Varanasi and a piece of Bengali cinema history inside it.
Getting to Varanasi from Kolkata is quite easy. The train journey takes around 8 hours. We started from Howrah Junction railway station with standing tickets that cost only around 500 taka.
One thing to keep in mind though, Varanasi is an extremely chaotic city. The crowds, traffic, heat, and constant movement of people never really stop. Since it is a major religious destination, respecting the local culture and environment is important too.
Still, somewhere within all that chaos lies the real beauty of Varanasi. It may not be a city everyone falls in love with instantly, but once you visit, it stays in your memory for a very long time.
